Andalucia holidays

The Andalusian Summer. When the Afternoon Stops Existing.

There is a moment during summer in Andalucía when life simply stops.

Not slows down. Stops.

Around two o’clock in the afternoon, the streets of Alhaurín el Grande begin to empty. Shops close. Shutters come down. Doors are locked. The streets become remarkably quiet. If you come from Northern Europe, you may briefly wonder whether you have missed an important announcement.

Is it a national holiday? Has everyone gone home? Has the entire town collectively decided not to work anymore?

The answer is: more or less.

Welcome to the siesta

The famous siesta is not necessarily about sleeping for three hours after lunch. It can mean a nap, a long lunch, or simply staying indoors with the shutters closed while the sun outside is doing its absolute best to make life impossible.

And in Andalucía, this makes perfect sense.

Because at three o’clock in the afternoon, 38 degrees is no longer “lovely summer weather”. It is a personal challenge.

So the locals have developed a highly effective system:

Don’t.

Don’t go shopping.

Don’t go for a long walk.Stay inside. Eat. Rest. Read a book. Have a siesta. It is, frankly, excellent holiday planning.

The afternoon is not lost

For many Northern Europeans, this rhythm takes some getting used to. We are used to getting things done. Preferably before lunch. And if something is closed, we immediately want to know why.

In Andalucía, the answer may simply be:

“It is three o’clock.”

Of course.

The afternoon is not lost. It is simply postponed.

Around six or seven o’clock, the shutters rise again. People reappear. Shops reopen. The streets come alive.  And suddenly, the real day begins.

The secret to enjoying summer in Andalucía

The trick is not to fight the heat. It is to organise your day around it.

Enjoy the cooler mornings. Explore a village, visit a market or discover the Málaga region before the sun reaches its full strength.

Then do what the locals do.

Stop.

Slow down.

Have lunch.

Take a siesta.

By evening, Andalucía comes alive again. People meet for a drink, families sit outside and dinner starts late. Very late, if you are used to Northern European standards.

This is one of the pleasures of Andalucia holidays: discovering that you do not always have to be productive, efficient or perfectly on schedule.

Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all.

At Casa Lima, you can embrace that rhythm completely. Enjoy the morning, explore Andalucía, return during the hottest part of the day and relax in the cool of the house — perhaps with a cold drink, a good book or a jacuzzi in the private bodega.

Because in Andalucía, the afternoon is not wasted.

It is simply taking a very sensible break from the sun.

And after a few days, you may even start wondering why the rest of Europe is still trying to get things done at three o’clock in the afternoon.

Looking for a relaxing base for your next Andalucia holidays? Casa Lima in Alhaurín el Grande is the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the Andalusian rhythm and explore the Málaga region at your own pace.
